Players from clubs all over the district played in the WDGA Championships at the Port Fairy Golf Course on Sunday 23rd March. There were 31 men and 23 women playing in the 27 hole championship competition, 6 men and 22 women playing in the 18 hole competition, this included 5 players under 21. Tee off began at 8:30 am in light drizzle but this cleared and it was a good day for golf.

It was great to see some of the younger players in our district taking home major prizes and getting their names on the trophies.

The women’s District Champion was Molly O’Brien from Hamilton, who won it in 2023 and was runner up last year after a three hole playoff. Molly also backed up as the U21 Champion.

The Marc Leishman Trophy was won by Jayden McLeod of Heywood from his brother Noah McLeod, he also went home with the Champion of Champions Trophy having qualified for this trophy by winning Heywood’s championship.

Clinton Foster from Portland won the Senior Champion and Elijah McLeod from Warrnambool won the U21 Champion.

The WDGA would like to congratulate all the trophy winners and thank the players for supporting the event. We also thank Port Fairy Golf Club for hosting and helping out with the running of the day.

It was great to see our young juniors play against other golfers and play at different course to there home clubs. The scores did not reflect there enthusiasm to compete this year at Heathcote Golf Club.

All Matches were played in good spirits and represented our district well.

They enthusiasm was fantastic and all are looking forward to next years event.

At time of print we are unable to advise where next years event will be played,

Still waiting for Golf Australia to advise.

We are pleased to announce that the Western District Golf Association Inc. has introduced two new trophies for both boys and girls under 18. These prestigious trophies have been named in honor of our esteemed life members, Thelma Green and Robert Farrar. The girls' under-18 competition will now compete for the Thelma Green Trophy, while the boys' under-18 competition will vie for the Robert Farrar Trophy. Both Thelma and Robert have made significant contributions to our association, and it is fitting that their legacy continues through these awards.

There are still several events left in the season before the final event on Sunday, November 24th, at Camperdown Golf Club, where the presentation of both trophies will take place. We encourage all junior golfers to participate in the remaining events for 2024, as this will be an excellent opportunity to showcase their skills and be a part of this exciting new chapter in our association's history. We look forward to seeing as many juniors as possible at the upcoming competitions.
