news genericThe WDGA District Championships were held at Casterton Golf Club on Sunday 20 June 2021.

There was a very heavy fog in the area but the course was clear all day. The sun shone for most of the day with a period of cloudy skies during the afternoon.

The best scores for 18 holes were Jayden McLeod and Noah McLeod (Heywood) both with 71 closely followed by Daniel Battista (Hamilton) with 72.

When all players had completed their 27 holes, there was a three-way tie for the Championship between Jayden and Noah McLeod along with Clinton Foster (Portland) who all all carded 110 for 27 holes.

The playoff hole was the 18th to be played as many times as needed. Noah and Clinton parred the first playoff hole while Jayden played an unsatisfactory second shot and then hit his approach over the back of the green. His chip coming back was long and ran to the front of the green about 8 metres from the hole. He missed his par putt and was eliminated.

Back to the 18th tee with the sun having set both players hit excellent tee shots. Clinton's second shot was up the middle about 40 metres from the front of the green. Noah cut his second shot a little and ended up under some low hanging branches about 50 metres from the green. Unable play a lofted shot, he hit a punch onto the green but it ran just off the back edge of the putting surface. Clinton hit a low chip shot that landed on the front of the green and came to rest about 4 metres below the hole. Noah's putt came to rest about 2 metres short of the hole on a downhill putt but Clinton holed his uphill putt to take out the championship.

This result was a relief for as there was insufficient daylight left to play another hole and we would have had to declare joint winners.

So, the full results for the day were:

  • Marc Leishman Trophy - District Champion (27 Holes Stroke) - Clinton Foster (Portland) 110
  • W. M. Bell Trophy Best 27 Holes Handicap - Noah McLeod (Heywood) 110.5
  • K.G. Horne Trophy - Best 27 Holes Stroke (21 and under) - Jayden McLeod (Heywood) 110
  • Senior Champion - Best 27 Holes Stroke (over 50) - Shane Gurnett (Port Fairy) 111
  • Champion of Champions - Best 27 Holes by Club Champions - Clinton Foster (Portland) 110
  • 'B' Grade Best 27 Holes Stroke - Kevin Etherton (Casterton) 120
  • F.O. Bilson Trophy Best 18 Holes Stroke - Noah McLeod (Heywood) 71 c/b
  • 'C' Grade 18 Holes Stroke - Phil Niewand (Casterton) 93
  • 'C' Grade 18 Holes Stableford - Gary Carlin (Casterton) 33 points

Nearest the Pin:

  • Hole 8 Adam Waters (Casterton)
